Budget for the total, not just rent
The rent number is only part of the monthly cost. Build your budget around everything it takes to live somewhere.
- Rent per person
- Utilities and internet (if not included)
- Parking or transit
- Renter’s insurance
- One-time costs: application fees, deposits, furniture
Set the ceiling as a group
Groups tend to drift toward the budget of their highest spender. Share real ceilings privately if needed, and search at a level that works for everyone.
Compare cost per person
A larger unit with more roommates can lower the per-person cost. Always compare the all-in monthly cost per person across options.
